Digital map provider Navteq today announced a new technology agreement that will allow the company to more rapidly deploy innovative collection capabilities and accelerate the collection, creation, and storage of 3D map data and visuals. Navteq and Microsoft have agreed to work together to support technological advancements in this area, through which Navteq will also provide Microsoft Corp. with 3D map data and visuals to power new mapping features.

Navteq has been a provider of map data to Microsoft for the past 10 years. With this new relationship, Navteq will help advance important 3D collection technologies which, when integrated into Navteq’s broader proprietary data collection process, will support the capture of a range of advanced navigable map features at an exceptional level of accuracy and scale, the company said.

Navteq will be integrating these new technologies into its field collection vehicles, and customers will be able to benefit from this technology deployment. This will accelerate not only the efficient integration of 3D visuals into the Navteq map, but also new product development, Navteq said. Microsoft will be able to deploy the visuals generated through these efforts to their consumers via Bing Maps.

Magellan reinvented outdoor GPS when it introduced the Triton series, empowering outdoor enthusiasts with advanced design and innovative features. The Triton series is the first line of rugged, handheld navigation devices designed with a combination of brilliant color screens and ground-breaking mapping capability on all models, making Triton easier to use and more accessible to an expanding population of outdoor enthusiasts.

User Experience Improvements
The Triton series features many new improvements, including North American basemaps that provide more roads, more detailed locations, and better map displays.

Additionally, advancements include improved communication between a user’s PC and GPS unit; the ability to customize the user experience and gain quicker access to various features with a single click of the enter key; general systems settings are now more accessible on the Setting Menu; the ability to turn various pages on and off; a new elevation and coordinate entry user interface to easily add or modify values using the keypad; and the ability to access the Main Menu from any navigation page.

User-Generated Content
In most devices, the Triton offers the ability to support up to 2000 waypoints, 20 saved trails, and 40 routes; the ability to Start, Stop, and Resume track from the contextual menu; and the ability to Go-To-Next or Go-To-Previous point while in an active route.

More Additional Features
The Triton series offers the ability to: automatically notify the user when the battery is low, reduce backlight to help save battery life, quickly clear the active track line after the user decides to save a trail. In addition, users also have the ability to export and display more than just National Geographic TOPO! Maps.

Now users can display Aerial and Hybrid Quads, as well having a single way to activate all National Geographic maps on the Triton or SD card. The upgrade also includes the addition of advanced features including the ability to add custom coordinate systems; and the ability to calculate an area based on active track, saved trails, and saved routes.

VantagePoint Improvements
Magellan’s VantagePoint software, a powerful desktop application that enables users to customize the content on their Magellan GPS devices, has also been enhanced with a new user interface design, the inclusion of VantagePoint Lite for automatic software update alerts, GPS logging, improvements to map displays, detailed map legends, map layer customization, improved track playback, and the ability to edit tracks.

It is unfortunate that Magellan has stopped their activities in Europe. Let’s hope that Mitac with her Mio brand will introduce these outdoor products in Europe!

The DeLorme North America Data Sets provide a routable US highway, street, back road, and trail network. Detail also includes land cover, drainage and open water, plus places of interest. It is compiled from a variety of sources and includes a digital elevation model to provide topographic detail and contours.

DeLorme has announced its entry into the worldwide digital map data market. Building upon 33 years of cartographic publishing and GPS navigation development, DeLorme is making its US and World digital base maps available for use within third-party GIS
and OEM applications.

DeLorme offers two core digital topographic map data sets: DeLorme World Base Map at 1:250,000 scale, and DeLorme North America Data Sets, including a routable street and trail network of the US.

“DeLorme brings over thirty years of cartographic excellence to GIS and OEM professionals looking for a new source of supply,” said DeLorme President Dave Eshelman.

“DeLorme street and topographic map data has been enjoyed by millions of satisfied DeLorme software and atlas customers, and now that same data is available for third-parties.”

The DeLorme North America Data Sets provide a routable US highway, street, back road, and trail network. Detail also includes land cover, drainage and open water, plus places of interest. It is compiled from a variety of sources and includes a digital elevation model to provide topographic detail and contours.

The data has a positional accuracy of +/- 5 meters CE in areas where the majority of the US population resides. Street-level detail is also available from DeLorme for Canada and Mexico.

DeLorme World Base Map data provides a seamless 1:250,000 view of the earth, combining accurate object placement and projection with a unique topographic visualization, complete with a digital elevation model for the entire earth.

This data set offers a consistent level of detail and reliable horizontal accuracy of +/- 50 meters for all features worldwide, unlike previous public domain data sets. A comparison of the DeLorme dataset to competitors’ digital map data of developing regions illustrates the advantages of DeLorme in currency, positional accuracy, and level of detail.

“We developed Trimble Outdoors for the G1 to give Android enthusiasts an easy, convenient and affordable solution for outdoor navigation,” said Rich Rudow, managing director, Trimble Outdoors. “With Trimble Outdoors, G1 users can harness the power of GPS right from their phone to make the most of their trip. And there’s less to pack because no other equipment is needed. Just grab your phone, head to the trail or waterway, and go.”

Trimble Outdoors allows users to get maps of their locations, track routes with a GPS breadcrumb trail, and mark and edit waypoints along the way. The application also features a digital compass displaying the user’s coordinates, speed and heading.

Availability and Pricing
Trimble Outdoors is now available for download on the T-Mobile G1 through the Android Market and Trimble Outdoors Web site.

TomTom has signed a partnership contract with the developer of GPS products from Amsterdam, CosmicNavigation.
It’s for the first time in it’s excistence that TomTom will promote and market ‘third party content’. CosmicNavigation’s cycling, marine and touring content will initialy fall under this agreement.

CyclingAtlas, NauticAtlas and TourAtlas
CosmicNavigation has been developing navigation content for several years already. Now with the CyclingAtlas, TomTom users can add over 200 cyclingroutes to their TomTom. With the NauticAtlas, users can add the official marine data of the Dutch inland-waters to their TomTom device.

Both Atlasses are datasets that have been especially developed so they can be added to the TeleAtlas maps as an exta layer. This way the user can get all the possible information on it’s position, the route to follow and the surroundings. In the near future the Atlas product range will be expanded with different editions, such as the TourAtlas, legendary touristic routes for car navigation throughout Europe.
At first the Atlasses will be sold to the dutch TomTom users, but CosmicNavigation is already developing the international editions of these Atlasses.

Users create and share content
The CyclingAtlas or the NauticAtlas are sold as a cd with a unique code, that gives access to the secured part of www.fietsatlas.nl and www.vaaratlas.nl. The information online and the information on the cd together make the total solution complete.

Through the websites, registered user scan get usefull and unique content that allows them to enjoy their journey even more. The websites also allow users to create and share routes and content that they have added to the database online. The Atlas editors will monitor the content so that everyone can fully enjoy each others content.
